Grading

You can’t escape this part of the course, even thought we would all like to. Not even I enjoy assigning grades at the end of the marking period, but unfortunately they are a necessity. You will receive one grade after the first four and a half weeks (block one), and another after the second four and a half weeks (block two). Both of these grades will be averaged together to determine your grade for the marking period. If you only receive a grade for one set of four and a half weeks, your marking period grade will show up as an incomplete on your report card. Don’t worry! I will explain all of this as we get closer to the time.

Now, you are asking how I determine what grade you will receive in here. Each assignment in here will be assigned a pre-determined number of points. For example, assignment one is worth 40 points. I will set the number of points according to how important I think the assignment is. The first assignment is worth 40 points, while when we go to design a resume, it will be worth 200 points. WHY? The first assignment is just so we can get to know one another. However, I think you should receive points based on your creativity with it. A resume, on the other hand, should have no flaws, be professionally formatted on your computer, and should impress me just by my first glance at it. It could mean the difference between getting a job and not getting a job. Thus, it should be worth more points.

You will be notified of your performance in two ways. First, you will receive a progress report in the mail after the first two weeks of each block. Second, I will speak with each of you individually every Friday during class. I will let you know how you are doing in the class, tell you if you currently have any missing assignments, and let you know if there is anything you can do to improve your current status in the class. THIS WILL HAPPEN ON FRIDAY’S ONLY. Unless there are special circumstances, you will not be notified of your status in the class any time except for this day. If you are absent that day, you must wait until the following Friday to check with me on your status. During the week, you are to ask a student what you have missed. If there are any hand-outs, you must come up and ask me for them. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET THE WORK DONE FROM WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT. I will not ask you if you need the work.

Since you will be relying on each other a great deal to find answers in this class, it is important that you receive a grade based on your participation. I will do my best to help you get to know one another at the beginning of this course. After that, your participation will be worth 20% of your final grade. It will be easy to tell who is participating and who isn’t. The course will be much easier if you help one another, so don’t be shy! We will accomplish much more if everyone is helping one another. Class assignments will then be worth 80% of your final grade. I will go into this in greater detail in class, and you will have a chance to ask questions.

I am confident that each of you will do well in this class. Everything that you learn in this class will be something you can take with you into the real world. Take advantage of this! It is very unlikely that you will have a course like this again. Good luck to you and most of all, have fun!
