ROPES Lesson Plan

Name of Lesson: Introduction to Computers

Unit/Duty Area: Computer Applications

Objectives/Task – The student will:

Review: (where learner is) 5 minutes

Preparation: Have questions and teams made ahead of time. Bring candy.

Computer Trivia:

Start session by breaking class into two groups.

Announce that you have five basic questions to test their knowledge of computers. Each team will have a captain who will give the team’s final answer. The winning team will receive two pieces of candy; the losing team will have homework! NO! The losing team will receive one piece of candy.

Overview: (where learner is going?) 5 minutes

    1. Gain an understanding of basic computer vocabulary.
    2. Develop an understanding of the latest technology available on a computer.
    3. Perform basic Windows 95 and Internet operations.

If you exhibit knowledge of computer terms and operating systems, then you are preparing yourself with a background so that you benefit no matter what occupational route you take. In the present and future, all job areas will deal with computers and technology.

Presentation: (how learner will get there?) 15 minutes

Preparation: Hook computer up to overhead television. Have paper and writing utensils available.

           Steps:

    1. Make sure each student has taken a seat at a computer. DO NOT turn on until given permission.

    2. Show

    3. Begin by asking if anyone is familiar with the terms CPU, RAM, megahertz or clock speed, and Pentium.

    4. Ask volunteers to define the following words: (give correct definitions)

    5. -CPU (Central Processing Unit) – the "brain" of the computer.

-RAM (Random Access Memory) – standard type of memory that can be stored and accessed randomly.

-Clock Speed – the rate at which your computer processes date – measured in megahertz

-Pentium – a type of chip that greatly improved the speed and power of computers.

    6. Ask and discuss the following questions:

    7. -If you were to go out and buy a computer today, how much RAM would you get?

-How fast would your computer be?

-What kind of operating system would you use?

      Tell/Do

    8. Explain that student’s will watch the next explanation on the television. They must take notes so they know the steps once they do the exercise.

    9. -At this point, make sure everyone has paper and something to write with

    10. Double-click on the Internet Explorer icon in Windows.

    11. Explain that this next explanation will be the basis for the exercise they will complete.
    12. Once in the Internet, click in the Address box and type the following address: www.smartcomputing.com. Hit Enter.
    13. Once the web site has loaded, use the right scroll bar to go down the page and find the heading Computing Dictionary.
    14. Type in the word RAM and click on Search.
    15. Read the definition. Scroll down the page and type in the word clock speed. Click on Search.

Exercise: (how to make sure the learner gets there.) – 20 minutes

Repeat

-Using the notes that were just taken, have students (on their own) get onto the Internet and go to the Smart Computing web site.

-Have students go to the area that says Computing Dictionary.

Apply

-Hand out matching exercise titled Computer Vocabulary.

-Have students complete using their notes.

-Walk around the room to check for understanding.

Transfer

-Have students, using their knowledge of computer terms, come up with questions that they would ask a potential employer about the type of computers they are currently using.

Summary: (checking to see if learner got there) – 10 minutes

Computer Trivia:

    1. Have students break into the same groups they were in at the start of class.
    2. Announce that just like at the beginning of class, you will test their knowledge of computers.

    3. Ask the two teams questions the remainder of the hour, repeating some of the same questions and adding some also.
