My life in middle school revolved around my friends and writing letters, probably more than it should of. I hurt a lot of people in the process of trying to be friends with the "cool" people. The picture above is me with my two best friends, Kris and Traci. Back in middle school, we wrote letters in class every free moment we had. Sometimes we wrote them when we didn’t have free time; the teacher received that letter. And us? Well, we received a free trip to detention. Letters were our way of communicating back then. If we were happy about something, sad, or just plain ticked off, it was written through a letter. I’m not sure why it was that way. Perhaps we felt more comfortable writing things down on paper. Of course, we didn’t know this at the time, but we weren’t very mature in terms of communicating with one another back then. Writing was our release from verbal communication. It was a way to solve our problems through pen and paper. It was the simple answer to keeping our friendships together.
Our Two-Faced Friendships
A Double Voice
Hey girlfriend! Whut up? What are you doing tonight? |
Oh please say she’ll do something with me. |
Me? I don’t know yet. I’m waitin’ to see what everyone else is doing. |
We’ll probably have to go to the stupid movies again! God! I hate going there watching everyone make out while I sit there and pick my nose! |
Did you see that I couldn’t open my locker at the last five-minute bell? |
You mean did I see you begging Doug, the guy that I am in love with, to help you? Ya, I saw that. |
I was so embarrassed! I’m so glad Doug was there to help me. Do you know how stupid I would have felt going to the office? |
Ya, good thing you didn’t flirt with him! |
Anyway, can I borrow that blue shirt from you tonight? |
Oh great! I’ll never see that shirt again! |
Let me know if I can borrow it. Also, let me know if you want to go to the movies. |
I knew it! The movies again – Oh Joy! |
Write me back ASAP! BFF (Best Friends Forever) Love Ya, Kris P.S. Did you see Traci’s hair today? What is up with that? |
Why does she always talk about Traci? She’ll be talking about me in her next letter! |
My response to Kris:
Dear Kris,
Whut up? I am sitting in Mrs. Smith's class right now. She is SOOOO boring. Hope she doesn't notice me writing this letter. Of course I want to go to the movies tonight. Where else would we go? I can't believe you couldn't get your locker open! Doug is so cute, isn't he? Good thing he was there to help you. Of course you can borrow my shirt. Keep it as long as you like. Traci always does those weird things with her hair, doesn't she? I would NEVER wear my hair like that - oh my gosh! Write me back as soon as you read this. BFF back at you!
Love, Kristin
