Classroom Management
Noted educator Harry K. Wong, author of The First Days of School, recently told a convention crowd:
"Effective teachers can be defined with a single word. Effective teachers steal! Teachers who beg, borrow, and steal good techniques are teachers whose students will achieve", he added, noting that he is "the biggest burglar in the education field"!
Needs and expectations of both the teacher and the students should be clearly communicated and initiated beginning with the very first day of class. Rules and the consequences of breaking them should be implemented from the start. Consequences should be delivered quickly and consistently. Class rules can be developed jointly between the teacher and the students. Routine classroom procedures should also be implemented from the start of school. Every minute in the classroom should be utilized efficiently.
The classroom should be a place where a student feels safe and secure from
physical, emotional and social harm. Respect is crucial to maintaining a
positive environment. The teacher is responsible to provide stimulating and
relevant learning material and display an enthusiasm for continual learning.
