High School Days.

Of all my years in school, high school was my favorite.  Not even my college experience could top that of my high school years.  I loved everything about high school - classes, teachers, social activities, sports!  You named it, I loved it!

My first day of high school English class was awesome!  We were assigned to write a letter to ourselves to receive the day we graduated from high school.  We were to put our fears, what we were wearing that day, who our friends were, who we had crushes, etc.  We were to put as much information at we could; Ms. Erickson said chances were that half of the things we put down would have changed by the time we graduated.

Unfortunately, I don't know what I did with that letter.  But Ms. Erickson was right.  Many things in that letter did change.  In the letter, I said that I had a crush on a guy named Eric Bird.  I didn't ever even got a chance to meet Eric Bird!  I just said that because one of my friends liked his best friend.  My style of clothing also changed.  I remember the day I wrote the letter I had on a green mini-skirt, a green and white striped shirt, green socks, a green scrunchie in my hair, and white Keds on my feet.  I would NEVER match that well anymore.  There is such a thing as matching too well!  I matured in the way I wrote also.  I knew after I read that letter that my choice of words was now better when I wrote something; I thought that I sounded quite a bit younger when I wrote it, which I was four years.  However, the voice in that paper was much weaker than the voice that I graduated with; my writing on paper was much stronger.

As I dug into boxes to try to find some things to assist me with this project, I found my high school portfolio.  Unfortunately, portfolios were just beginning to find their way into the high school as I was leaving.  As I looked through mine today, I was disappointed to find very little.  Of course, it contained all of the important documents like ACT scores, grade records, college letters, etc.  However, the only paper I found was one entitled, "Me". At a page and a quarter in length, it really didn’t even pass as a paper, but just a writing from my freshmen English class.

My senior year of high school I had the opportunity to do a pro/con paper in my English Composition class.  We could choose from several topics that our teacher, Ms. Miller, had given to us.  I chose euthanasia.  I enjoyed doing this paper because I was forced to keep an open mind throughout the whole thing. Even though I had my own opinion before I started the paper, I was forced to think about why someone with a differing opinion would think the way they do.  I was for euthanasia, so it was easy to come up with reasons why it would okay for this type of thing to happen.  However, the challenging part was putting myself in the shoes of someone who was against this issue.  I had to come up with reasons why someone would not agree with euthanasia.  By being forced to do this, I learned to respect the position that these individuals take on the topic.  My opinion remained the same, but I found reasons why it could be swayed at some point.

One of my favorite classes in high school was publications.  The publications class was always the one who designed the yearbook for that school year.  Everyone who wanted to be in this class didn't get to, so I feel fortunate that I was a part of it.  We all worked hard at writing articles, conducting interviews, selling yearbook ads, taking pictures, and cropping them just right so the page would be perfect.  I really enjoyed the independence that we were given in this class.  I also liked writing articles; it gave me a different style to work with.

Reading during high school was a hard thing to do.  I still enjoyed it as much as ever.  However, there were so many activities going on in my life, I rarely found a enough time to study, let along time to pick up a book.  When I was able to read, however, I really enjoyed the work of V.C. Andrews.  She wrote the book "Flowers in the Attic."  She also had a series of books called "Dawn", which I really enjoyed.

I graduated from high school on June 11, 1993.  I was headed to the Land of the Chippewas, Central Michigan University.  There was no one more ready for college than me!
